Concussion education usually takes the form of a symptom checklist. The problem with a checklist is that it asks an athlete to recognize, from the inside, a condition that impairs exactly the faculties needed to recognize it.

Collision Course approaches this differently. It simulates the perceptual and cognitive effects of concussion, including visual disturbance, delayed response, and difficulty tracking instructions, then asks the user to complete ordinary tasks under them. The learning goal is not a list of symptoms but a felt sense of what impairment is like, and by extension, why the person next to you might not be able to report it accurately.

What we measured

The work connected to a parallel line on physiological sensing in VR, using EmotiBit to look at stress response during immersive experiences. That pairing of a designed experience with a physiological signal from the person having it is the through-line to the radar work. Both are about instrumenting an interaction so that something otherwise invisible becomes legible.

The project took 2nd place at the Morgan TechFest poster competition in 2023 and was presented at the International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics in 2025.
